CI Financial's executive team is responsible for the management and success of the company, subject to the oversight of the Board of Directors. Our executives are all experienced leaders, who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of CI.
William T. Holland
Mr. Holland is the Chairman of the Board of the Corporation. He joined CI in 1989 and worked in progressively senior roles before being appointed Chief Executive Officer in 1999, a position he held for more than 10 years. Under his leadership, CI significantly expanded its product lineup, diversified its distribution and made a number of acquisitions that contributed strongly to the company’s growth and presence in the Canadian asset and wealth management industry.
Mr. Holland has been a director of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation since 2006 and a director, member of the Governing Council and member of the of the Nomination and Governance committee of the Sunnybrook Foundation since 2018.
Mr. Holland is a director of Real Matters Inc., a technology company that provides services for the mortgage lending and insurance industries.
Mr. Holland has served as Chairman since 2017 and was Executive Chairman from 2010 to 2017. He has been a Director since 1994.
William (Bill) Butt
Mr. Butt brings two decades of experience in managing a large and growing multinational financial services organization to the CI Board.
Most recently, he was Global Head of Investment and Corporate Banking for BMO Financial Group, one of the world’s largest banks. In this role, he was responsible for BMO’s business with major corporations worldwide encompassing equity and debt financing, corporate lending, mergers and acquisition advisory services, merchant banking, trade finance and global treasury management. His accomplishments included the expansion of BMO’s business in the United States and into Australia, China and India.
As one of BMO’s senior leaders, Mr. Butt sat on its Management Committee and its Capital Markets’ Executive, Operating and Management Committees.
He serves on the Board of Directors of OMERS, one of Canada’s largest pension plans, and chairs its Investment Committee and previously chaired its Audit & Pension Committee. He is a former director of Xplornet Communications and chaired its Human Resources and Governance Committee.
Mr. Butt is Co-Chairperson of the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada’s $75 million “Stand Up For Kids – Futures Transformed Campaign” and a member of the Children’s Aid Foundation’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee (2016-present). He previously served as Chairperson of the St. Michael’s Hospital (Toronto) President’s Council (2011-2021) and on the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Windsor, MBA from the Ivey Business School, ICD.D from the Institute of Corporate Directors, and studied at the Rotterdam School of Management. He is a past recipient of Canada's Top 40 Under 40 honours.
Mr. Butt has been a Director since 2019 and is Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.
Brigette Chang
Ms. Chang is President of the Raymond Chang Foundation, a charitable foundation established by the late G. Raymond Chang, one of the Corporation’s founders and its CEO from 1996 to 1999. She is Treasurer of G. Raymond Chang Ltd., a privately held investment holding company. From 1999 to 2003, she worked in Ernst & Young’s Audit and Business Advisory group.
Ms. Chang is a Director of two private companies, Mercatus Technologies Inc. and ColorAd Packaging.
She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto.
Ms. Chang has been a Director since 2018 and is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee.
Kurt MacAlpine
Mr. MacAlpine was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Director of CI Financial in September 2019. He has extensive experience in the global asset and wealth management industry, having previously served as Executive Vice-President and Head of Global Distribution for WisdomTree Asset Management and as a Partner and Leader of the North American Asset Management Practice at McKinsey & Company.
At WisdomTree, a global asset manager and exchange-traded fund sponsor based in New York, Mr. MacAlpine was responsible for all client-facing functions globally, including distribution, marketing, data intelligence and strategy, business development and client solutions. He also oversaw the majority of the firm’s international businesses, which during his tenure included employees in Canada, Europe, Japan, Israel and Latin America and strategic partnerships in Asia and Australia and New Zealand. He was a member of the company’s global executive management committee and sat on the boards of several of its international entities and AdvisorEngine, a digital wealth platform.
Prior to joining WisdomTree in July 2015, Mr. MacAlpine was a Partner at McKinsey, a global management consulting firm, based in its New York office. In his role as a Partner, he managed global consulting teams working with some of the largest asset and wealth managers in the world on topics related to strategy, distribution, marketing, international expansion, mergers and acquisitions, and product development.
Mr. MacAlpine holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Saint Mary’s University and an MBA from Queen’s University.
Paul J. Perrow
Mr. Perrow has over 30 years of valuable leadership experience in the asset management industry. Mr. Perrow was Senior Vice-President, Director of Sales and Marketing with CI Investments Inc. until December 1996. From 1996 to 2013, he held a number of other senior industry positions, including: Managing Partner of Red Sky Capital, which offered investment funds to accredited investors; Co-Head and Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers Canada; Co-Founder and President of Fairway Capital Management Corp. (Toronto); and President and Chief Executive Officer of BluMont Capital. He was also a Director of Integrated Asset Management Corp. when it was a public company.
Mr. Perrow is also Chair of the Investment Committee of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation.
Mr. Perrow is a Director of Euro Sun Mining Inc. (formerly Carpathian Gold Inc.), a Canadian-based development-stage mining company.
He has been a Director since 2018 and is a member of the Governance, Human Resources, and Compensation Committee.
Sarah M. Ward
Ms. Ward is a globally recognized leader in business law with more than three decades of experience serving leading financial institutions and other large international firms.
She practiced law for more than 35 years at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP (“Skadden”), where she was a New York-based Partner in the firm’s Banking Group and co-chair of its Legal Opinion Oversight Committee. Ms. Ward’s practice focused on representing borrowers and lenders in acquisitions, leveraged financings and corporate restructurings. Her clients included a wide variety of public companies, private equity firms and financial institutions.
Ms. Ward’s experience at Skadden also included membership in its Policy Committee, the firm’s governing body, and serving as global co-head of the Banking Group from 2009-14. She also authored numerous articles related to her areas of practice and has lectured extensively on banking-related topics.
Ms. Ward holds a Doctor of Law degree from Fordham University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University.
She has been a Director since 2022 and is a member of the Governance, Human Resources, and Compensation Committee.
Kurt MacAlpine
Mr. MacAlpine was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Director of CI Financial in September 2019. Darie Urbanky
As President, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Asset Management, Mr. Urbanky oversees all aspects of CI Global Asset Management, CI Financial’s core Canadian asset management business, including investment management, portfolio operations, distribution, product development and management, as well as all operational aspects of the firm.
Prior to his current roles, Mr. Urbanky was Chief Technology Officer, overseeing technological functions at CI. Before that, he had been with CI for over 20 years, serving in progressively more senior roles in Information Technology. His experience also includes roles in financial technology at companies such as DST Systems (now IFDS).
Mr. Urbanky holds an MBA from Rotman School of Business and a master’s degree in computer science from University of Toronto and has attended leadership and management programs at Queen’s School of Business.
Amit Muni
As Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Muni overseas the company’s global finance operations and investor relations teams.
He joined CI Financial in May 2021 from WisdomTree Investments, Inc., a publicly traded asset manager where he served as Executive Vice President and CFO since 2008. Prior to WisdomTree, Mr. Muni served as Chief Accounting Officer of International Securities Exchange Holdings, Inc (“ISE”), one of the worlds leading electronic options exchanges, where he lead ISE’s successful public offering in 2005. He also previously worked at PwC LLP, where he performed audit and business advisory services for multinational and mid-sized broker dealers.
Mr. Muni is a graduate of Pace University in New York and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Marc-André Lewis
As Chief Investment Officer, Mr. Lewis leads a team of more than 100 investment professionals at CI Global Asset Management and oversees the continued development of the firm’s integrated global investment platform.
Mr. Lewis has over 20 years of global investing experience and has held senior leadership positions at several organizations, including two of the world’s largest institutional investors. His diverse experience spans asset allocation, portfolio construction, risk management, public and private markets, and fundamental and quantitative strategies.
Prior to joining CI GAM in September 2021, Mr. Lewis was Head of Portfolio Construction at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds. His responsibilities included strategic asset allocation, quantitative research and alternative indexing activities, as well as sitting on the executive and tactical asset allocation committees for its Strategy and Planning Department.
Prior to ADIA, Mr. Lewis was Senior Vice-President and Deputy Chief Risk Officer at Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), where he led a team that analyzed and monitored the risks of both public and private investments in the CDPQ portfolio. He was also a member of the CDPQ asset allocation committee.
Mr. Lewis’s previous positions also included Senior Vice-President, Risk Management – Fixed Income and Overlay Strategies at CDPQ and Senior Vice-President, Fixed Income at Natcan Investment Management, where he oversaw a team managing $16 billion in Canadian and global fixed-income assets. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics from Pierre and Marie Curie University (now Sorbonne University).
Ted Kelterborn
Mr. Kelterborn is Executive Vice-President and Chief Legal Officer of CI Financial and leads the team responsible for all legal affairs of the corporation and its subsidiaries. He joined CI in 2016 from First Asset Investment Management, where he served as Senior Vice-President, Legal and Operations. Prior to joining First Asset, Mr. Kelterborn was Vice-President and General Counsel of Claymore Investments Inc. (now part of BlackRock). Prior to joining Claymore, Mr. Kelterborn was a lawyer with law firms in Toronto and Bermuda and served as Associate General Counsel–Corporate at Nortel Networks. Prior to Nortel, Mr. Kelterborn was a partner at McMillan Binch (now McMillan LLP), practising in the firm’s corporate/commercial and securities law groups.
Mr. Kelterborn also serves as a director of the Canadian Exchange Traded Funds Association and holds a BA from Carleton University and an LLB from the University of Ottawa, and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1992.
Manisha Burman
As Chief Human Resources Officer, Ms. Burman leads people strategy and execution, corporate programs and community giving. In addition, she is responsible for supporting the rapid growth, transformation and integration of CI’s business.
Ms. Burman’s previous experience includes progressively senior roles in financial services and professional services, where she worked across HR, strategy and transformation functions. Most recently, she was Head of Workforce Strategies and Client Experience at BMO Financial Group. In this role, Ms. Burman worked directly in the business, leading the full renewal and redesign of all sales, service and leadership roles, the relaunch of learning and communications and the implementation of a new client experience program, resulting in improvements to client loyalty and productivity and increased market share. This role included practice management accountability for BMO’s approximately 750 financial planners. Prior to that, Ms. Burman was CHRO of BMO Capital Markets and Wealth International.
Ms. Burman holds a master’s degree in Industrial Relations from University of Toronto, an undergraduate degree from the University of Western Ontario and a Certificate of Business Management from the London School of Economics.
