2026 LONG-TERM CAPITAL MARKET ASSUMPTIONS

Our latest edition of CI GAM’s Long‑Term Capital Market Assumptions explores and analyzes a world that is rapidly changing, but not drifting away from its underlying long-term trajectory. Here’s a snapshot of what we anticipate in the foreseeable future:

  • Steady global growth driven by fiscal policy, technology‑led productivity and sustainable interest rates.
  • Anchored inflation near central bank targets, supporting confidence in long‑term planning.
  • Selective opportunities across equities, fixed income, private markets and emerging markets, shaped by valuations and policy dynamics.
  • Stable currency outlook with the Canadian dollar still undervalued relative to the U.S. dollar.

2026 MARKET OUTLOOKS

EQUITY

Global equities enter 2026 at a pivotal moment, with moderating inflation, synchronized rate cuts and a powerful artificial intelligence (AI)-driven capital expenditures surge reshaping demand across sectors. Regional opportunities are strengthening in Europe, Japan, Canada and emerging markets, while the U.S. remains expensive. This scenario makes active positioning essential to capture opportunities across global markets.

FIXED INCOME

Early 2026 seems poised to be a dynamic period for fixed income. Policy uncertainty and political shifts are in play, yet government stimulus and AI-driven investments are fueling a more growth-friendly backdrop. Most central banks are tilting toward rate cuts, though regional differences persist. Meanwhile, new borrowing for AI projects and rising corporate leverage could introduce volatility, which makes adhering to disciplined, selective strategies more important than ever.

PRIVATE MARKETS

Private markets are evolving as themes like AI-driven innovation, infrastructure investment and shifting capital flows reshape the landscape. From private equity and venture capital to credit and real assets, new dynamics are profoundly influencing strategies and opportunities across the spectrum.

ASSET ALLOCATION

As market drivers shift from valuations to corporate fundamentals, investors should look beyond the "Magnificent 7" mega-tech companies for opportunities in less-stretched sectors. Fixed income has regained appeal through positive real rates, with credit markets offering stability given strong cash flows despite relatively tight spreads. Concurrently, commodities appear poised for a structural turnaround, led by gold’s surge as a pivotal hedge against geopolitical tension and currency debasement.

CURRENCY

After a year of political shifts, policy reversals and unexpected FX moves, 2026 begins with a more balanced backdrop. We expect a modestly weaker U.S. dollar and a more constructive outlook for the Canadian dollar as trade clarity improves. Explore hedging costs, Euro-versus-CAD dynamics, emerging market opportunities and key risks for the pound and yen, along with actionable insights for Canadian portfolios.
